The South African Reserve Bank has introduced a commemorative R2 coin recognising Charlotte Maxeke and the women associated with the historic 1956 Women’s March. The coin brings an important part of South African history into everyday circulation and creates an opportunity for families and schools to discuss the contribution of women to the country’s democracy. Commemorative currency remains legal tender and can be used like other coins of the same denomination. Collectors may value the design, but its greatest significance is the story it carries.
